Professor John Owusu Gyapong, the former Director of the Research and Development Division of the Ghana Health Service, has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ghana.
He is to succeed the foundation Vice-Chancellor of University of Health and Allied Sciences, Professor Fred Newton Binka, whose term of office ends on July 31, 2016. Professor Gyapong is a public health physician and an epidemiologist.
As the Director of Research and Development, Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Service, he led the process of defining the Health Research agenda for the health sector and supervised three Research Centres in Navorongo, Kintampo and Dodowa.
He has considerable experience in infectious diseases epidemiology especially Lymphatic Filariasis, Onchocerciasis and Malaria and also the Coordinator of the Lymphatic Filariasis Support Centre for Africa, based in Accra and serves on several international research review committees and boards.
